Musekiwa, Terrence b.1990 / Green Mask
about this work
Terrence Musekiwa works to tear down the conceptual wall between traditional stone carving and contemporary art. While he begins each work with the traditional stone carving method taught to him as a child by his father, he continues exploring contemporary African visual language which focuses on found and discarded materials. While this practice is rooted in the lack of resources that past generations experienced, today, Musekiwa uses discarded materials to discuss current religious, historical, traditional and quotidian turmoil. The Chinese products that have inundated Zimbabwe have been of particular interest to him, as he sees the country adapting to this new ruler. Confronting aesthetic and ideological preconceptions is at the core of his work. The artist uses different materials, chains, glue, garden tools, and other commercial products to both challenge and honor his roots. Embedded within the stone are the multifarious conversations and struggles of his people.
