Johnson, Helen b.1979 / Pardon my French (Avoid The Subject)
about this work
This work speaks of liminal, transitional spaces and the emotional states that accompany them. It was produced at a time when I was packing up my life in Melbourne to spend a period of time in Europe, and contemplating the demise of a long-term relationship. The figures in the work are in their own ways retreating into themselves as the objects that constitute their world together are thrown into flux. The work is structured to suggest an intimate view of the scene through a hole in the wall, leading again through a window to an exterior space, though this offers no respite from the upheaval; only a broadening of its field.
