Do Espirito Santo, Iran b.1963 / Black Restless 01
about this work
"Restless, a series of large thick sheets of glass placed on the floor, and resting on the wall, that Espírito Santo began to produce in 1997. In Restless, the surface of each single piece of glass is mirrored or sandblasted in distinct rectangular areas, suggesting the appearance of multiple superimposed panes. While there is a long tradition of works that endeavour not to appear to be works of art, few artists have been able to produce such a level of near invisibility for the artwork. Espírito Santo achieves this by detecting the precise point where familiarity makes us stop looking. This is especially ironic given the fact that his works often require hard looking to be perceived as art. Uncanny sensations are produced, changing our perception of reality, of where we find ourselves, and disrupting our ideas of normalcy."
