I Nyoman Masriadi (b.1973, Indonesia)

I Nyoman Masriadi has attained international recognition with his surreal and satirical images whose witty narratives present social commentary rooted in Indonesian cultural history, contemporary life and global pop culture.

Born 1973, in Gianyar, Bali, he received his training in art at the Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, where he lives with his wife Ana and his two children. Something of a phenomenon, his career is a rags-to-riches story combining creative genius, cultural sensitivity, and a refusal to conform. Masriadi’s paintings frequently depict superhuman figures whose narratives, while rooted in Indonesian cultural history, offer witty and often biting social commentary on contemporary life and global pop culture. Masriadi’s visual vocabulary is continuously refreshing and contemporaneously relevant. As Ashley Bickerton explains; ” Masriadi’s work is decidedly of this moment. This is Indonesian art coming clearly into its own. Although we see many artists today succumbing to a convergent globalised style, Masriadi’s work has managed to fuse many divergent and distinct rhythms into one of the clearest and most Indonesian of voices”.

He has held international solo exhibitions at Recent Paintings held in New York (2011) and Black is My Last Weapon, Singapore (2008). He has participated in numerous group shows which included India Art Fair, New Delhi (2012); Art Basel, Switzerland (2011); Art Basel Miami Beach, United States of America (2010); Art Paris + Guests, France, Paris (2010); The Simple Art of Parody, Taipei MOCA, China (2009);Beauty and Terror, Paris, France (2005); Seni Rupa Campur, Dordrecht, the Netherlands (2000); Masa Kini, Dordrecht, The Netherlands (1999) and Hitam Putih + Plus – an Exhibition of Kelompok Prasidha, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (1994). In addition, Masiradi is the first living Southeast Asian artist whose work has topped $1 million at auction.
